Earthquake drives more New Zealanders to Australia
The hard facts...
- New Zealanders are migrating to Australia in record numbers.
- Since the devastating earthquake on 22 February 2011, there have been 6,000 departures from Christchurch, compared with 3,700 during the same period in 2010.
- Over the past year, some 40,000 Kiwis have moved to Australia.
- That’s around one person every 15 minutes!
The good bits...
- New Zealand and Australian citizens enjoy reciprocal residency arrangements, meaning New Zealanders can move to Australia and find work without applying for visas.
- Another factor attracting Kiwis across the Tasman Sea is the relative strength of Australia's resource-driven economy compared to its New Zealand counterpart, which has experienced muted growth in the past 12 months.
- The Australian economy is relatively stable with projected growth of 4% for calendar year 2012, according to the Reserve Bank of Australia Bulletin.
- The Australian property market is experiencing a “levelling” period and represents good buying opportunities over the short to medium term
